Bassface: Bass Design, Mixing, and Mastering Masterclass

Getting the bass in your mix just right is crucial for the success of your song. Insufficient bass can make it sound weak, while excessive bass can drown out the other elements and result in a wall of sub-bass. That's where we come in 😎

In this workshop we will cover:

1. Bass/Sub Bass synthesis: no matter how many effects you use, you’ll be fighting a losing battle if you aren’t using the right type of sound. We’ll look at how to create effective bass sounds from scratch, identify if presets and samples have enough sub integrity, and how to effectively layer where needed

2. Bassline programming: Stuck with 1 note bass lines that have no vibe or definition? We’ll show different techniques to make sure your songs feel fat and unique on dance floors.

3. Mixdown techniques: There are multiple factors for controlling bass in your mix, and they’re all situational depending on the sounds and style of music. We’ll look at identifying potential problems, different solutions, and how to check if the solution has been successful. This includes gain staging, EQ, compression, sidechains, multi band processing, and parallel effects.

4. Analyzers: Most producers won’t have an accurate monitor representation of bass. It requires large speakers or a sub woofer, and an insane amount of acoustic treatment to get even close to a “flat” bass frequency response, so the only reliable way for you to monitor these sub frequencies is with meters. We’ll show a variety of stock and free analyzers and how we use them to identify and correct issues.

5. Readying your mix for mastering: When you’re getting your song ready for a final master, the bass is a huge determining factor in the ability to reach the desired loudness and consistency most producers are looking for. We’ll share some of the most common things we give as feedback on songs we are sent to master to make sure we’re able to get the best final product possible.

6. Intro to mastering bass heavy music: Mastering opens up an entirely different perspective and skill set, but there’s a few basic things that will help make sure you have success when attempting to master bass heavy, low end focused music.

This workshop is accessible through Zoom for online participation, and there are a limited number of in-person spots available. Those who register will receive a workshop recording, along with instrument and effect presets that were showcased and demonstrated during the workshop.
